ASH WEDNESDAY marks the beginning of LENT. Let us try to understand Ash Wednesday:
WHY ASH WEDNESDAY?
It got its name because on this day, the ashes were being distributed.
Brief History
ASH WEDNESDAY is connected to the PUBLIC PENANCE done for FORTY (40) in the old church.
WHO ARE PUBLIC SINNERS?
this is for those who committed MURDER, APOSTASY, ADULTERY.
HOW DO THEY PRACTICE THE PUBLIC PENANCE?
- the bishop imposed his hands upon the penitents
- the penitents are transferred to the ORDER OF PENITENTS
- the penitents are excluded and not allowed to join the Eucharistic Celebration
- receives penitential garments
- ASHES ARE IMPOSED UPON THEM
- the church expresses her love and concern by praying for them during the prayer of the faithful
- On Holy Thursday the penitents were reconciled with the community of the faithful and admitted to the Eucharist.
11TH CENTURY
The Imposition of ASHES is not only for the PUBLIC PENITENTS. ALL the FAITHFUL receives the ASHES in SOLIDARITY with PUBLIC SINNERS.
The PUBLIC PENANCE disappeared but rite of imposing ASHES
new development in this era was the blessing of the ASHES for the FIRST TIME.
12th CENTURY
There developed the custom that the ASHES were to be obtained by burning the Palm Branches of the previous year.
VATICAN COUNCIL II
The prayers and readings of ASH WEDNESDAY were changed to a great extent. They are now richer and much more Easter-Oriented.
Imposition of ASHES is integrated into the mass.
Meaning of ASHES?
1. SYMBOL OF TRANSIENCY
- they are residue of something that was burned and has vanished
- by receiving the ASHES, we are reminded how short and how passing human life is
- receiving the ashes should lead us to a realistic self-appraisal and help us to OPT for lasting values and for what really counts
2. SIGN OF PURITY
They look dirty but ib reality they are very pure element since they are the result of a burning process in which fire destroyed all impurities.
The reception of ASHES is a CALL and an INVITATION to undergo such a process of purification in the coming forty days. “Since it is burning, it can be very painful but it is purifying and liberating.”
